Rolex is a great watch manufacturer, so when we read years ago that the "Cartel" was claiming, with a patent application no-less, to have invented the first automatic watch in the Oyster Perpetual, we were dumbfounded. Like most enthusiasts, we knew Rolex was incorrect. A minimal horological search, then and today, leads you directly to an Abraham-Louis Perrelet design of a freely oscillating weight whose energy would wind the mainspring of their Perrelet-1777 pocket watch. Eight minutes of walking produced 24-hours of power reserve...160 years before Rolex's claim...Dang...!! Hello, Rolex...did you go to the Moon too...?! We feel better now...! Suffering through the dark ages of horology, also known as the Quartz boom, Perrelet was resuscitated in 1993 in Neuchatel Switzerland, and today make two of the most beautiful styles seen.
